RE: Propane Refills for $10.99?

I have been unable to find any propane supplier in the Minneapolis metro area that does not charge a flat fee for filling 10#, 20#, or 30# propane tanks. The cheapest I have been able to find is around $16 with tax for a 20# tank.
I wish it was a law that they had to charge only for the amount put in the tank.

RE: Food on a Stick -- at the local fair

This year they are serving bacon covered with chocolate at the MN State Fair. It is 1/3lb bacon fried and covered with chocolate. And to top it off, it is served on a stick!

Aria Classic toilet and vacuum breaker

I bought an Aria Classic china toilet to replace the plastic one in my RV. (Wanted the elongated seat mainly)
Anyhow, the vacuum breaker is plastic tied to the toilet. Should I remove the tie and let it just hang freely in the air? The plastic tie looks like it is for shipping only, but I don't know if the vacuum breaker should just hang freely either.

RE: Passes on I80

It snowed along I80 in either Utah or Wyoming on Oct 1st last year. Another vehicle was traveling home from the same event a few hours ahead of us and it had snowed enough to be plowable. By the time we came through the snow had melted.

The newspaper I get has both a website and automated phone line to stop paper delivery for vacations.
I use the web and it works every time.

RE: 18 Wheeler Trailer Height ?

I'm somewhere around 12'9" or so. I cringe going under anything that is less than 14'. There is a bridge around here marked at 13'8", but it has a grade on one side. You wouldn't catch me going under that bridge with a semi.
When my rig was new to me I almost made it into a convertible. I missed a low bridge sign at night and was part way under the bridge before I realized it was too low. The bridge was shorter in the center so I got part way under it before realizing I was gonna have a problem.

A 45 minute reserve might seem low if the reserve used to be 90 minutes or something like that.

RE: 09 Newmar Ventana Fails Safety Inspection **UPDATE**

I bought a coach bus (to convert to an RV) in Virgina and it never should have passed the inspection.
Fog lights inoperable
Only one front brake worked
Brake shoes worn beyond legal
Exhaust pipe cracked
Tires pretty much bald
The used bus dealer I dealt with does their own state inspections. (Talk about conflict of interest!) The repairs cost just about $10,000 not including tires. Had the inspection failed as it should have I would required repairs or asked for a better price.
The Virginia state inspection requirements for buses and heavy trucks are ridiculous for the $50 or whatever it costs. The inspector is actually supposed to pull the drums to inspect the brakes. $50 is about 1/2 hour labor. No way they can pull the drums and do all the rest in 30 minutes.
I live in Minnesota and no inspections required here for RVs and cars.

RE: 15th Brickyard 400

If Goodyear is the official tire of Nascar, why aren't teams getting the Goodyear tires for free?
I suppose the sponsorship money benefits Nascar itself and not the teams.

RE: Tire Prices

Goodyear, The same company that had tires issues at the NASCAR race this weekend. Hmmmmm ?
I suppose we shouldn't buy a Ford, Dodge, Toyota, or Chevy either because their engines blow up at Nascar races?
There may be other reasons to avoid Goodyear tires, but them using the wrong compound on a tire for Nascar is hardly a good reason.

RE: Good Sam's Emergency Road Service -- Non-service

I have Coachnet for towing and for tire changing. I'm sorry, but I cannot jack up a 36,000lb vehicle and change a 24" 150lb tire/wheel on the road. I don't own a big enough jack to lift my vehicle, let alone an air wrench that can do 500 ft lbs to loosen/tighten the lugnuts.
My RV is old so it is likely to require a tow at some point. One tow in a decade will most likely pay for the service for all that time.

RE: I've come around- Hybrid electric cars in the future

Some of the taxi companies here in Minneapolis are using Priuses, but most are still using Crown Vics that were formerly police cars.
I'll buy a hybrid when they have a diesel-electric model that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. The Prius is nice, but a Corolla is a lot cheaper and still does pretty good on the MPG. I have a VW Golf and I am waiting for someone to make a hybrid in that size.

RE: Government's gas bill

Cutting off bus service entirely is probably more a result of school finances than the increased cost of fuel for the bus.
School districts here in Minnesota are in dire straits due to expenses increasing faster than revenues. Cutting bus service is a popular way to save money, but it really doesn't save much in the big picture.

RE: Boy Scouts in Iowa

This is absolutely a terrible thing for the boys and their families.
I camp with a scout troop every summer and have thought about somthing like this from time to time. Our local camps have been lucky with major storms coming through when camp wasn't open for the summer.
I wonder if this camp has storm shelters? The camp I go to has buried concrete shelters, but I wonder about getting everyone into them quickly enough. Some of the scouts would have a 10 minute hike to get to the shelter plus the time needed to get the warning out.

RE: Tip For Saving .55/gal At Kroger! (GAS)

At least they have a 30 gallon limit instead of 12 gallons like Cub Foods has.
I read recently about an RVer that bought $1300 worth of diesel for his bus conversion with a gas coupon and they let him apply it to his entire over 250 gallon fill.

RE: Diesel engines.....?

You will see Semi's with diesels that have that 300,000+ miles on them, but those guys take care of their equipment...it's their paycheck!!
300,000 miles on a semi is practically new. A good over the road driver can easily rack up 300,000 miles in two years or less. Semis are routinely driven to 750,000 miles or more.
My friend sold his semi tractor with over 1 million miles on it and the engine had never been overhauled. His was a 2000 model sold in Nov 2007. It averaged somewhere over 100,000 miles a year.

RE: New Lawn Mower

The old Lawn Boys were awesome. Very light with magnesium decks.
I worked cutting grass commercially and they had a number of the old Lawn Boys, but later bought the cheapie $150 Lawn Boys and those were junk for commercial use. They finally wised up and bought commercial Lawn Boys that worked great.
Lawn Boy got bought out by Toro and now most Lawn Boys are just Toros with green paint instead of red.

RE: Today's kids really ARE out of shape, or are they just lazy?

Around here, if even a small percentage of car riders started riding the buses, the county wouldn't be able to afford it. The buses are near capacity already, and the county is having a tough time dealing with the high cost of fuel. I don't know how they'd come up with the funds to cover the cost of the extra buses, drivers and fuel that would be needed if most of the car riders started taking buses. They have a very tough time getting enough bus drivers anyway.
I assume in your area they must require signing up to get bus service then? Unless things have changed locally everyone gets bussed automatically if they live far enough away. The stops are probably no more than 1 mile apart at most so skipping stops won't save much.
I'm in a first ring suburb which is different from a rural area. Everyone who lives far enough can take the bus.

RE: Folks NOT Slowing Down!

Let me ask you this, ya'll. If someone is driving 55mph on the rural, outside of city limits interstate during offpeak hours in the slow lane, would that be OK? Is it not the responsibily of the overtaking vehicle to pay attention while driving and be prepared for slower vehicles in their lane?
I mean, after all, the signs say "speed limit", not "speed required". As a matter of fact, the signs around these parts specify "speed limit 70, minimum 40".
Certainly, it is the responsibility of others to watch out for those going slow, but someday someone won't be paying enough attention and will ram into the person doing 55 MPH. I know more than once when I've been going the 70 MPH speed limit that I've misjudged how fast I am approaching someone going quite slow and had to brake hard.
Anyone going over the minimum speed is legally within their rights to be on the interstate, but how safe is it for them?
